What Are GM Magneride Shocks?
MagneRide is a semi-active suspension technology developed by the former GM subsidiary Delphi. The system has no electro-mechanical valves or small moving parts. MagneRide was first introduced on the Cadillac Seville STS in 2002, followed by the C5 Corvette in 2003. Today, MagneRide is standard or optional on several GM vehicles, including:
- Cadillac (Most Models), 2002-Present
- Chevrolet Corvette, 2003-Present
- Chevrolet Camaro SS and ZL1, 2012-Present
- Chevrolet Silverado, 2017-Present
- Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, 2015-Present
- GMC Sierra, 2014-Present
- GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, 2015-Present
How Does MagneRide Work?

The MagneRide system includes the following components:
- Four monotube dampers (shocks or struts) filled with magneto-rheological (MR) fluid
- A set of electronic sensors
- A dedicated Electronic Control Unit (ECU)
The MR hydraulic fluid in MagneRide shocks contains soft iron particles. The damper pistons include electromagnetic coils. When these coils are energized by the ECU, the iron particles become magnetized. The alignment of the iron particles changes the viscosity of the fluid. This modifies the damping characteristics of the shocks.
The ECU monitors inputs from sensors to detect body and wheel motion. The sensor readings are used to change the amount of electric current supplied to the coils in the dampers. This allows precise continuously-variable control in response to vehicle movement and road conditions.
How Are Magneride Shocks Better Than Conventional Shocks?

Conventional dampers can only have one setting from the factory. This means they can provide either more comfort or better handling, but usually not both. They can be tuned for either a softer or firmer ride, and the compromises that come with both. Shocks must respond to a variety of driving and road conditions while keeping the tires safely in contact with the road.
Manually-adjustable dampers provide some flexibility, but you still have to choose between a softer or firmer ride. You also have to access the shocks behind the wheels to adjust the setting control. MagneRide shocks are adjusted electronically in real-time for both optimal handling and comfort with minimal compromise. MagneRide is also integrated with the vehicle’s stability control system for enhanced safety.
Can I Replace My Own MagneRide Shocks?
Replacing MagneRide shocks is similar to replacing standard shock absorbers. The main difference is an electrical connector that attaches to the shock. If a MagneRide shock absorber is bad, it’s important to get the correct fitting OEM replacement part with the correct connector. (Learn more about OEM vs. Aftermarket shocks here.)
